Typical Applications for DC Current Sensors

The ability to monitor currents discretely is often a requirement for the accurate control of the complex DC circuits used in many commercial and industrial applications today. DC current sensors are often used to facilitate the monitoring required. These are used in applications such as:

  • Current measurement in sensitive circuits: Since DC current sensors are electronically isolated from the circuit under observation, they are able to measure the current in a circuit without affecting its electrical characteristics. This makes it the ideal option for sensitive circuits that rely on a precisely regulated current in order to function.
  • Load sensing: DC current sensors are ideal in load sensing applications. Highly accurate throughout most of their rated current, they can be used to measure an increase or decrease in the load requirements of a circuit.
  • Ground fault sensing: Due to their incredible sensitivity, DC current sensors are the ideal choice for sensing ground faults in electronic circuits. They are often used in conjunction with a device designed to stop power to a circuit—such as a circuit breaker or relay switch—if ground fault is detected in order to protect it.
  • Device failure detection: DC current sensors can be used to detect device failures, especially in circuits with components that do not produce a significant change to the voltage difference when they fail.
